It won’t always turn on and it’s slow as fuck, but it’s a good car guaranteed to put a smile on your face. MG owners are a family, join us!

I've DD'd my Bug for years so I am used to slow and quirky.

Do it. An exercise in British weirdness and glory. 1978 MGB here.

Buy the least-rusty one you can find, especially an early one with the quarter-elliptic springs. Once the spring perches rust, it’s an extensive repair. A clean example with bad engine, paint and interior will be cheaper than a rusty one with good mechanics and cosmetics. If that one in the ad isn’t rusty, 3 grand is a steal.

This. ALL of this. Rust will devour your money. With a ‘63 you should have a 948cc engine and four wheel drum brakes. Easy upgrade is a 1275 from a ‘67-74 Midget with either its transmission or (better) a Nissan five speed (which in and of itself is getting rare). Second easy upgrade is the front disc brakes from a newer Midget.
But first, look for rot. A pillars, rockers and sills, rear spring mounts, battery box, floors. The first three are structural members too....

Well, not the A-pillars as such (those are aluminum and held on with giant Philips screws) but the cowl underneath.

Yeah, that’s what I meant...down by the door hinges, the boxed-in structure that traps moisture at the bottom.

I know, I’m just being pedantic. It’s a natural byproduct of MG ownership, somehow.
20 years later, the MG’s have gone but the pedantry remains.

I still have my Midget...have had it since 1989. Paint’s peeling, the bonnet that was mashed in when I got it in ‘89 is still mashed in. It runs well, it’s not rusty, the brakes are good...and it makes me smile like a fool.

Nice. I’d still have mine if it wasn’t for the big divorce liquidation. I could use some grins these days.

If the body isn’t in too bad shape, 2900 is a steal. Buy it!
